Rest, Restore, Receive: God’s Design for Postpartum Healing

Brave Arrows Homebirth Midwifery | Erie, Colorado

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

There is a sacred slowing that happens after birth. In a world that rushes recovery and praises “bouncing back,” the Lord gently invites mothers into something different—rest, nourishment, and connection. At Brave Arrows, we believe postpartum is not a time to push forward, but a time to be held, restored, and renewed. Your body has done holy work. Now it is time to heal in a way that honors God’s design.

The 5-5-5 Rule: A Rhythm of Restoration

A simple, time-tested framework we encourage is: 5 days in the bed, 5 days around the bed, 5 days in the house.

5 Days in the Bed

This is your deep rest phase. Stay in bed as much as possible—feeding your baby, sleeping, and receiving care.

Why it matters:

  • Supports uterine healing and reduces bleeding

  • Protects pelvic floor recovery

  • Encourages milk supply to establish

  • Creates uninterrupted bonding time

This is not laziness—it is obedience to the design of your body.

5 Days Around the Bed

Now you begin to gently move—short walks to the bathroom, sitting in a chair, light stretching.

Why it matters:

  • Improves circulation

  • Prevents overexertion while still encouraging mobility

  • Builds strength gradually without risking setbacks

5 Days in the House

You can begin slowly re-engaging with your home environment, but still remain protected and supported.

Why it matters:

  • Prevents premature stress on your body

  • Allows continued bonding without outside pressure

  • Supports emotional adjustment into motherhood

Nourishment: Fueling Healing the Way God Intended

Postpartum is not the time to restrict—it is a time to rebuild.

Increase Calories

Your body needs more nourishment now than during pregnancy, especially if breastfeeding. Aim for 4000 calories of high quality nutrition daily.

Focus on:

  • Healthy fats (butter, avocado, grass-fed meats)

  • Protein-rich foods for tissue repair

  • Warm, easy-to-digest meals like soups and stews

Why it matters:

  • Supports milk production

  • Stabilizes hormones

  • Promotes tissue healing and energy restoration

Food is not just fuel—it is provision from the Lord for your recovery.

Hydration: Supporting Milk & Energy

Water is essential in postpartum healing.

Aim for

  • Electrolyte-rich fluids

  • Herbal teas (like nettle or red raspberry leaf). Continue enjoying your NORA tea.

  • Drinking to thirst, often with each feeding

Why it matters:

  • Supports breastmilk supply

  • Prevents headaches and fatigue

  • Helps regulate body temperature and healing

Skin-to-Skin: God’s Design for Bonding & Regulation

Holding your baby close—skin to skin—is one of the most powerful tools you have.

For Baby:

  • Regulates temperature, heart rate, and breathing

  • Stabilizes blood sugar

  • Promotes successful breastfeeding

  • Reduces crying and stress

For Mom:

  • Releases oxytocin (“the love hormone”)

  • Helps the uterus contract and reduce bleeding

  • Encourages milk letdown

  • Strengthens emotional connection

This is more than science—it is God’s intentional design for attachment and security.

Rest Is Not Weakness—It Is Wisdom

Culture may tell you to “do more,” but Scripture and physiology tell a different story.

Resting postpartum:

  • Reduces risk of complications

  • Supports mental and emotional health

  • Builds a strong foundation for motherhood

When you slow down, you are not falling behind—you are leaning into the rhythm God created for healing.

Support Matters: You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone

At Brave Arrows Homebirth Midwifery in Erie, Colorado, we believe postpartum care is just as important as prenatal and birth care. You deserve:

A Gentle Invitation

Mama, if you are preparing for postpartum or currently in it—receive this truth:

You are allowed to rest.

You are allowed to be cared for.

You are allowed to slow down.

And in that stillness, healing comes.
